Student Pre-Requisites:

Minimum age of 14.

Be able to swim 200 meters.

How to get started:

Collect your Open Water Crew Pak. This consists of a briefcase containing :

SSI Dive Manual,

SSI Dive Table,

Open water Diver DVD,

SSI Deluxe Diver’s Log,

(This pack is yours to keep at the end of your course).

Study the Dive Manual and complete the knowledge reviews. Obtain your dive medical. Choose your course dates from our calendar available at the web site or in the shop.

Your course will start with a review of the material that you have read, you will then commence shallow water training, which consists of 5 separate sessions, at the end of which you will be ready for the deeper open water dives and the highlight of the course, the boat dives.

The cost of the course is $550.

Do I need a dive medical?

For most people the answer is no but if you answer yes to any question on the medical questionnaire below, a doctors certificate is required before your dive. Should you need a medical you should book it as soon as possible as sometimes it is hard to get an appointment at short notice. The cost of a dive medical varies from about $70. We will accept a medical certificate from any GP, if you have any difficulties finding one, there is a list on our web site.

If a YES answer is given to ANY of the following questions then a diving medical certificate from a doctor will be required prior to any dives.

Have you ever had or do you currently have any of the following:

Asthma or wheezing with breathing or exercise?

Frequent or severe attacks of hay fever of allergies?

Frequent colds, sinusitis or bronchitis?

Any form of lung disease or Pneumothorax?

Back, arm or leg problems following surgery?

Chest disease or chest surgery?

Behavioural, mental or psychological problems

Epilepsy or preventative medications?

Seizures, convulsions or preventative medications?

Migraine headaches or preventative medications?

High blood pressure or preventative medications?

Blackouts or fainting or recreational drug use?

Heart disease or heart attack, angina or heart surgery?

Frequent or severe motion sickness?

Dysentery or dehydration requiring medical intervention?

Sinus surgery, Colostomy or Ileostomy?

Dive accidents or decompression sickness?

Ear disease, recurrent ear or balance problems?

Inability to perform moderate exercise?

Bleeding, diabetes or other blood disorders?

Head injury with loss of consciousness within 5 years?

Hernia, or recurrent back problems or back surgery?

Ulcers or ulcer surgery?
